EDM is an acronym for Electrical Discharge Machine. There are two types of EDM technology. WEDM (Wire) is the most common where the machine uses an electrode (brass or brass-coated wire from a spool) that is constantly fed through the material it is eroding. The electrode never touches the material and transfers electrical current or frequencies to the area being eroded, creating sparks as the wire erodes or melts the material away. As the material is cleared, the EDM continues on a pre-determined geometry path often programmed in Espirit. The other type of EDM is RAM-EDM. This EDM uses copper, brass, steel with graphite the most commonly used electrode. These materials are shaped by other equipment (mills, lathes, etc.) and the shapes or electrodes are then mounted on the RAM-EDM machine. When the electrode comes close to the material being EDM'd it erodes or melts the material to conform to the shape of the electrode. EDM of either type is only possible on conductive materials. As with all cutting-edge technology, the EDM process has evolved with technological advances over the past twenty years and CTD has evolved with it. The technology has led to the explosion in the machining, electronic, computer and aerospace sectors. We purchased our first WEDM in 1986 and have been expanding the EDM department ever since. Our 20-years of EDM experience has kept us abreast of the latest EDM technology. We are dedicated to providing the absolutely the best in EDM quality and delivery. |
